The right mattress and base can mean the difference between a refreshing night’s sleep and staring at the ceiling for hours on end. This helpful guide will help you to choose the perfect bed for you to drift away in night after night.
You should never put a new mattress on an old base as it can quickly develop the same faults as the old mattress

How to tell if you need a new bed
When a bed is no longer providing proper support & comfort it affects the quality of our sleep. Beds don't last forever - lifespan is affected by factors such as the quality, care & amount of use, plus changes in lifestyle & body shape can also necessitate a change of bed. It may be time for a new mattress if...
- You wake up with aches & pains, which wear off as the day progesses
- You are not sleeping as well as you did a year ago
- You enjoy better sleep somewhere other than your own bed
- Your mattress shows signs of visible wear & tear
A new bed should help you get a better night's sleep, leaving you feeling refreshed & ready to face the world!
Divan or bedstead
Divans
Divans act as bases for mattresses & either have springs which allow the mattress to adapt to the body's contours or a solid top for firmer support. Most divans are available with storage options so are great for bedrooms that are short on space.
Bedsteads
Bedsteads are more decorative and will give your room a contemporary or traditional look. To support the mattress the most common system is a wooden slat base. Storage is available in some ranges with side drawers, end drawers or a lift up ottoman.
Which size bed do you need?
It’s a good idea to choose a bed that is 10-15cm longer than the tallest person sleeping in it. The more room you have, the better you will sleep.
The diagram below indicates the length and width of the various bed sizes;

Storage or non-storage
Storage beds are a great way of maximising the space that your bed takes up and are especially useful if you have a limited amount of storage space in your room. We offer lots of different storage options to suit all your needs including;
- - 2 drawer
- - 4 drawer
- - Single end drawer
- - End slide storage
- - Side slide storage
- - Lift up storage
- - TV bed
Choosing the right mattress
Support in a mattress comes from its spring system. It is important that you find the right level of support to ensure that you consistently get a good night's sleep. There are a number of different spring systems available, each offering different levels and types of support. Systems to look out for include;
Open spring
Open springs are the most popular type of springs. They're an all-round, great value spring system that's ideal for kids beds & adult beds. Their firmness levels are created by varying the number of springs & the thickness of wire - 13 guage (firm), 13.5 guague (medium firm). There are around 288 hour glass shaped springs in a double & 325 in a king size mattress.
Continuous spring
This is made of a continuous coil of wire crafted into twice as many springs as a regular system. As the spring runs from head to toe (not side to side as with open springs) your body weight is distributed up & down the bed so you have a smooth responsive feel that rules out bumps & there's no 'roll together'.
Ortho
These are specially designed to give extra support. The firm to extra firm mattress has unique pressure relieving properties for a restful nights sleep. Just because its called ortho it doesn't mean its the best one for your back. A softer mattress may help alleviate a bad back & be kinder to sensitive joints.
Trizone/Silentnight Miracoil 3, Posturezone
These are firm, supportive springs concentrated in the centre third of the bed where there's the most weight.
Pocket springs
The most luxurious spring system. Hundreds of lightweight springs in rows of fabric pockets give perfect independent support to your body's contours. This means that you have no roll-together and no roll off so you will disturb your partner less when you move or turn over. Remember, the more springs a mattress has, the more comfort & support it provides. Pocket sprung beds tend to have 2 or 3 times as many springs as ordinary beds.
Double spring unit
Just as it says, these mattresses have 2 layers of springs to give you extra firmness & support
Memory Foam
With memory foam mattresses, your body heat softens the foam, which then moulds to your body's contours as you sleep, providing extra comfort & support
Latex
These mattresses have a deep layer of latex that sits on top of the springs. Latex is a natural product tapped from rubber trees. It is perfect for allergy & asthma sufferers because it is hypo-allergenic so no bacteria, mold or mildew can grow. It also repels dust mites.
What level of firmness do I need?
Medium
The springs & fillings are specially designed to give you a softer & slightly springier level of support. Medium firmness is h6est suited to those who sleep on their side.
Medium firm
The most popular level of firmness, medium firm mattress are often cited as the h6est for sufferers of h6ack and neck pain as they give your spine a good h6alance of support and cushioning.
Firm
These heads have special fillings designed to give you firmer support. They are a good choice for anyone who prefers to sleep on their h6ack or stomach
Extra firm
Also known as orthopaedic h6eds, extra firm mattresses provide the highest level of support and are h6etter suited to those with a heavier h6uild
Mattress Covers
Mattresses & divans are usually covered in matching fabrics.
Damask covers
These are woven & renowned as stronger & h6etter quality
Deep quilt covers
Multiple layers of soft fillings stitched together to create a smooth, firm, flat finish for extra comfort & support
Micro quit covers
These are the most popular type where the cover is stitched to extra layers of filling to give a distinctive, decorative raised pattern & soft luxurious feel
Traditional hand tufted covers
This is where tension tapes are passed h6y hand through the mattress & secured with felt tags for an attractive h6uttoned finish & a slightly firmer feel
Panel quilt covers
The top layer is stitched to the supporting felt pad to secure all the layers of filling, which prevents movement & gives consistent shape & comfort
Occasional and guest beds
It's always a good idea to be prepared for overnight guests & sleepovers. We have a variety of space-saving folding beds, guest beds, air beds & futons that can be easily stored away and put up in seconds when you need them.
The most common types of occasional/guest beds are;
Folding beds
Folding beds fold in half for easy storage and may either come with a spring base or wooden slats for a firmer feel
Air beds
Air beds are the ultimate space savers as they take up very little space when deflated. All of our air beds come with an electric pump so that they can be inflated in seconds. As well as making great guest beds, they are also ideal for camping.
The Anywhere Bed is an airbed with a base which is a fantastic space saver. The base has a concertina folding mechanism so it can fold down to stand on just 1 square foot of floorspace.
Guest beds
A guest bed is a standard single bed that has an extra bed stored within its base. Low level guest beds are lower than the main bed wheras high level guest beds have pull out legs to raise it to the same height as the main bed. A high level guest bed can be used as a double bed. Some of our guest beds are available seperately and can be stored under bedsteads or bunks when not in use.
Headboards
Headboards are sold as optional extras so that you can personalise your divan base. Choose from our range of contemporary through to traditional styles, some of which co-ordinate with our divans.
Kids' beds
We have a wide selection of kids beds which are all BS8509 approved as well as tested to meet FIRA standards meaning you can sleep easy knowing that your children are in the safest of hands.
As always, space is key in most children's rooms, so all of our beds are conscious of this and often come with additional storage and space-saving solutions.
As well as standard single beds, we also offer a broad selection of bunk beds. Bunk beds offer a great space saving solution if you have more than one child sleeping in the same room. All of our recommended mattresses are selected specifically to comply with bunk bed safety regulations. Please note, top bunks are not suitable for children under the age of six.
Junior beds are ideal for small children and the perfect bed to gently ease them from a cot into a full size bed. Designed to be the perfect size for toddlers, they are 4ft 10ins in length as opposed to the 6ft 3in of a standard single bed
Measure up! Make sure your bed will fit
It's always a good idea to measure your space first before ordering a new bed. One good tip to help you to visualise how the bed will look in your room is to lay out newspaper on the floor to the size of the bed you want. This makes it easy to see how much room it will take and how much space you will have around it. Don't forget to allow extra room for doors or drawers to be opened!
All our beds are measured in centimetres. In order to assist you with your measurements, please refer to our conversion chart:
1 inch = 2.54 centimetres | 1 centimetre = 0.394 inches |
1 foot = 30.5 centimetres | 1 metre = 39.4 inches |
1 foot = 0.305 metres | 1 metre = 3.28 feet |
All our 4ft 6ins double, 5ft king & 6ft super king size beds are delivered in multiple packs for ease of delivery
You should also consider any awkward angles or narrow hallways & stairwells that need to be negotiated - especially for ready assembled items
Should you envisage any delivery problems regarding access to your home, please mention these when placing your order (e.g. if you live in a block of flats and the only access for large goods is via a goods lift).
How to care for your bed
It's a good idea to air your new mattress for at least 4 hours after delivery to remove any aroma.
Not all mattresses are designed to be turned (e.g. mattresses with built in toppers or fillings are not meant to be turned). All other mattresses should be turned over & turned round to ensure even wear and that springs wear evenly. For the first 6 months you should turn them over every week and then once a month after that. You should also turn them from head to toe - every week for the first 6 months.
General do's and don'ts
- Do vacuum your mattress regularly to clean it of microscopic flakes of skin which attract dust mites
- Do avoid sitting on the edge of the bed as the more that it is sat on the faster it will wear down and start to sag
- Don't place your bed in direct contact with strong heat. Leave at least a 30cm gap between your bed and a radiator
- Don't allow children to jump up & down on the mattress as this will rapidly accelerate wear and tear
Top tips for cleaning your fabric upholstered bed
- Do blot any excess liquid from spillages with a clean sponge
- Do always take care to follow the manufacturers instructions before using any cleaning aids
- Do test the cleanng product on a hidden area first
- Do use a clean damp cloth and if neccessary use a gentle cleaning aid for general dirt & stains
- Do always use white cloths when treating stains to avoid transferring colours
- Do ensure you always use a clean area of cloth, changing it regularly to avoid working the substance back into the fabric
- Don't rub or scrub as this will spread the stain & may damage the fabric
- Don't use hot water as this can set the stain into the fabric
- Don't use detergents as these may cause colour loss
- Don't over wet at this may shrink fabrics or backing fibres
